    One base, a whole region

Flanders is small, flat and superbly connected, which makes Bruges an ideal base: you can be in medieval Ghent in twenty-five minutes, on a North Sea beach in fifteen, or at the sobering memorials of Ypres by lunch — and back in your own bed in Bruges by dinner. Here are four of the best, all reachable without a car.

    Destinations

    Four easy escapes

The Graslei guild houses along the Leie in Ghent

    Ghent

    25 min by train

A bigger, edgier medieval city — the Graslei guild houses, the Gravensteen castle, and a student buzz Bruges doesn't have.

A wide North Sea beach on the Belgian coast

    The coast

    ~15 min by train

The North Sea and wide beaches, with the Kusttram running the whole coastline — Ostend for art and belle-époque, De Haan for calm.

The rebuilt Cloth Hall in Ypres

    Ypres (Ieper)

    ~1 hour

The rebuilt Cloth Hall, the In Flanders Fields museum, and the Last Post at the Menin Gate — the moving heart of WWI Flanders.

The tree-lined canal from Bruges to Damme

    Damme

    20 min by bike

A storybook village along a straight tree-lined canal — cycle out from Bruges, lunch, and cycle back.

    Practical

    Make it easy

Belgian rail is cheap & frequent

SNCB day returns to Ghent or the coast are a few euros — no car needed, trains run all day from the central station.

    Go early, home for dinner

Start after breakfast for a full day out and you'll still be back in Bruges for the evening — the best of both.

    Bike to Damme

The flat canal-side ride to Damme is a lovely half-day; rent bikes in Bruges.

    One trip per day

Don't over-pack it — one destination a day keeps it a holiday, not a commute.
