    A small city, savoured slowly

Bruges rewards the unhurried. Give it two weeks and you can learn the lanes, take the whole region at a stroll, and still have every evening to yourself.

The trick is where you sleep. Stay in the centre and the whole plan below unfolds from your doorstep — no buses, no wasted mornings.

    The plan, on a map

    Two weeks, one base

Bruges is home the whole time. Week one stays in the city, on foot. Week two fans out — a short train or a bike ride away, and back to your suite by dinner.

    Week One

    01 · Bruges, on foot

Seven days without a train. You settle in, learn the lanes, and let the city change with the light. Tap any day to open it.

    Morning

    Climb the Belfort

Do the 366 steps first thing, before the queues. The Markt below is at its calmest, and the carillon rings out over the rooftops.

    Midday

    Coffee on the square

Take a terrace on the Markt and watch the carriages set off. Lunch light — dinner is the event.

    Afternoon

The Burg & the Holy Blood

Steps away, the Burg holds the ornate Town Hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Duck inside for the relic and the hush.

    Golden hour

    Rozenhoedkaai by boat

Walk to the most photographed corner in Bruges, then take a half-hour cruise as the light turns amber.

    Evening

    Dinner in the lanes

Leave the squares behind — the best tables hide in the side streets. Mussels, waterzooi, a Trappist beer.

    Morning

    Michelangelo & the masters

Start at the Church of Our Lady for the Madonna, then the Groeningemuseum for six centuries of Flemish painting.

    Midday

    Lunch in the south

Drift toward the quieter southern lanes and find a small place away from the crowds.

    Afternoon

    The Beguinage

Cross into the walled Begijnhof — white houses, a courtyard of trees, and a calm the day-trippers rarely reach.

    Golden hour

    Minnewater

End at the Lake of Love as the willows go gold in the water. The prettiest last light in the city.

    Morning

    Choco-Story

The history of cocoa from the Maya to the pralines — then the tasting counter, which is the real reason to come.

    Afternoon

    De Halve Maan brewery

Tour the last working family brewery in the centre, climb to the rooftop view, and finish with a fresh Brugse Zot.

    Evening

    Two or three chocolatiers

Skip the chains — seek out the small makers on the back streets and put together a box to take home.

    Morning

    Sint-Janshospitaal & Memling

A medieval hospital turned museum, home to Memling's luminous small panels. Quiet, and often near-empty.

    Afternoon

    Gruuthuse

A merchant's palace of tapestries, oak, and a private chapel that looks straight into the Church of Our Lady.

    Evening

    A canal-side table

Nothing scheduled. Find water, order slowly, watch the light leave the brick.

    Morning

    Market morning

Time it for the Saturday market on 't Zand or the Wednesday market on the Markt — flowers, cheese, and locals doing their week.

    Afternoon

    The Sint-Anna quarter

Walk east into the residential lanes most visitors miss — the Jerusalem Chapel, almshouses, and lace history.

    Golden hour

    The rampart windmills

Follow the old town wall north to the windmills above the canal. The best free view in Bruges.

    Dawn

    The Beguinage, empty

Go back at opening, before the coaches. In spring the courtyard is a sea of daffodils and you may have it to yourself.

    Midday

    Minnewater park

Bread for the swans, a bench in the sun, and absolutely nowhere to be.

    Afternoon

    One café, unhurried

Pick a window seat and stay too long. This is the day the city stops being a checklist.

    Anytime

    Rent bikes

The flat lanes and canal paths are made for two wheels. No route — just follow the water.

    Anytime

    Go back to your favourite

The corner, the café, the view that stuck. Seeing it twice is the luxury day-trippers never get.

    Evening

    Rest up

Tomorrow the region opens up. Early night, easy start.

    Week Two

02 · The region, and home by dark

St Bavo's Cathedral holds the restored Adoration of the Mystic Lamb — one of the most important paintings in the world.

    Afternoon

Fifteen minutes and you're on the widest beach in Belgium. Walk the promenade and breathe salt air after a week of brick.

    Midday

    Ensor's city

The Mu.ZEE and the painter's masks, or just fresh grey shrimp and a glass of white on the front.

    Optional

    The tram north

The Kusttram runs the whole coast — ride up to chic Knokke or the dunes if the weather holds.

    Getting there · ~1 hr
    Morning

    In Flanders Fields Museum

In the rebuilt Cloth Hall — a moving, personal account of the war that erased and remade this whole region.

    Afternoon

    The cemeteries

Tyne Cot and the surrounding memorials. Quiet, vast, and impossible to forget.

    8 pm

    The Last Post

Buglers have sounded it under the Menin Gate almost every evening since 1928. Stay for it before the train back.

Getting there · 30 min by bike
    Morning

    The canal path

A flat, poplar-lined tow-path straight out of Bruges. One of the loveliest short rides in Flanders.

    Midday

    Damme itself

A storybook village of bookshops and a Gothic town hall — lunch on a terrace before the ride home.

    Afternoon

    The long way back

Loop through the polders and windmills. No hurry — you're home in half an hour.

Getting there · 1 hr by train
    Morning

    The Grand-Place

One of the great squares of Europe — gilded guild houses and a flower carpet of a plaza. Coffee under the gables.

    Midday

    Magritte

The museum devoted to Belgium's great surrealist. Pipes, bowler hats, and a very dry sense of humour.

    Afternoon

    The Sablon

Antiques, the best chocolate in the country, and a Gothic church, before the easy train back north.

Getting there · 1 hr 15 by train
    Arrival

    Antwerpen-Centraal

Step off into one of the most beautiful railway stations on earth — a marble-and-glass palace. The day starts well.

    Midday

    Rubens & the cathedral

The painter's house and the Cathedral of Our Lady, which holds his greatest altarpieces in their intended light.

    Afternoon

    Fashion & the MAS

The MoMu fashion museum or the riverside MAS tower for a last, wide view over the Scheldt.

Getting there · you're already home
    Morning

    No trains today

Two weeks in, the city is yours. Coffee where the regulars go, one more walk with nowhere to be.

    Golden hour

    A last canal

Back to the water that made you stay. Watch the light go amber on the brick one final time.

    Evening

    Farewell dinner

The table you loved most, unhurried. Pack in the morning — you never had to change hotels once.

    Two-week tips

Book a rail pass for week two

If you're doing several day trips, a multi-trip rail ticket or a weekend-return works out cheaper than singles — sort it once and forget it.

Stay central, so day trips are easy

A short walk from the station turns a fourteen-night stay into fourteen effortless mornings. Central beats cheap-but-far every time.

    Planning questions

    Good to know

    • Not if you use it as a base. The city itself is a relaxed week; the second week is day trips across Flanders — Ghent, the coast, Ypres, Brussels, Antwerp — all under about an hour away, with Bruges to come home to each night.

    • No. Every day trip here is by train or bike. Belgian rail is fast, frequent and cheap, and Bruges station is a short walk from the centre.

    • Front-load the city while it's fresh (week one, on foot), then spread the day trips through week two with a slow day or two between them. Nothing here is fixed — swap days freely for weather.

    • If you only pick a few: Ghent for the art and the buzz, Ypres for the Last Post, and the coast for a lungful of sea air. Damme by bike is the quiet favourite.

    • Somewhere central you won't want to leave — you're there fourteen nights. The Music Suites keeps you a short walk from both the sights and the station, so day trips are effortless.
