SUMMER · JUNE–AUGUST

# The city plays out loud

When the light stretches to ten o'clock and the squares fill with sound, Bruges spends its summer outdoors. Here's a season of festivals — most of them a short walk from your door.

Mostly 5–20 minutes on foot

## A season with no plan required

From mid-June the medieval centre turns into a stage. Some nights it's a headline act by the Lake of Love; some nights it's early music drifting out of a church; some nights it's a café band you stumble into on the way home. You don't need a plan — you need a base in the middle of it.

THE LINE-UP

## What plays in Bruges each summer

MID-JULY · MINNEWATERPARK

### Cactusfestival

Belgium's most likeable festival is also one of its smallest. A single stage in Minnewaterpark — the willow-fringed 'Lake of Love' — a few thousand people, and a line-up that swings from indie to soul to whatever's good this year. It's about a 15-minute walk from the suites, so you can drift home between sets instead of queuing for a shuttle.

LATE JULY–EARLY AUGUST · EARLY MUSIC

### MAfestival

For ten days Bruges becomes the world capital of early music. Grand concerts fill the Concertgebouw while lutes and viols turn up in candlelit churches and even on guided musical bike rides through the polders.

ALL SUMMER · FREE · IN THE CENTRE

### Moods!

Free open-air concerts light up July and August across the old centre — a warm-evening habit more than a festival. No tickets, no field, no plan: finish dinner, follow the sound.

EVERY WEDNESDAY · JULY & AUGUST

### Klinkende Kroegen

'Ringing pubs.' Every Wednesday evening through summer, bands set up in and around the cafés of the centre and the whole quarter hums until close. It's the most Bruges way to spend a summer night — on foot, glass in hand, drifting from one doorway to the next.

FIRST SUNDAYS OF JULY & AUGUST · 'T ZAND

### Brugse Zandfeesten

Belgium's largest antiques and brocante market takes over 't Zand — the very square the suites sit on — from dawn. Hundreds of stalls, coffee in hand, the best finds gone by nine. Roll out of bed and you're already there.

LONG LIGHT EVENINGS

## Beyond the festivals

Even between festivals, a Bruges summer earns its keep: canals mirror-still at golden hour, terraces that don't empty till late, street-dancing at Benenwerk, and a 15-minute train to the North Sea when you want sand. The trick is simply being here when the light is long.
