WHAT IT REALLY COSTS · 2026

# Bruges, honestly priced

Bruges isn't Paris-expensive, but the small costs add up — attractions, cruises, and a tourist tax that changed in 2026. Here's the honest picture, and the easiest way to spend less.

## No hidden agenda

We run a guesthouse, so we'll also show you where booking direct quietly saves you money. Everything below is walkable from the centre — transport is one cost you can mostly skip.

THE HONEST BUDGET

## Where the money actually goes

SIGHTS

### What the sights cost

The big-ticket items are modest: the Belfry climb, the Groeningemuseum, a half-hour canal cruise, a brewery tour. Pick two or three a day rather than collecting them all — Bruges is as much about the free wandering as the ticketed stops.

FOOD & DRINK

### Eating & drinking

A Belgian beer, a bowl of frites, a praline or two — you can eat brilliantly here without a fine-dining budget. Lunch menus and standing beer bars are where the value is; the Markt terraces charge for the view.

THE NEW RULE · 2026

### The 2026 tourist tax

Since 1 January 2026, licensed holiday rentals in Bruges charge a city tourist tax of about €4.00 per adult, per night (including VAT), rising to about €4.20 from 1 March 2026 with the Belgian accommodation VAT change. It's per person aged 18+, added to your stay. Always check the current year's rate — it's reviewed annually.

SAVE

### How to spend less

Walk everywhere (the centre is tiny), take your coffee away from the Markt, see the free city — the Beguinage, the canals, the squares — and book your stay direct: The Music Suites gives 5% off the best online rate, which more than covers a couple of nights' tourist tax.
