## Why the canals are the heart of Bruges

Bruges grew rich on water. The 'reien' that ring and thread the old town were once its trading arteries; today they're the loveliest way to see it — mirror-still at dawn, gold at dusk, crossed by more than fifty little bridges. A half-hour boat ride reveals facades you can't reach on foot, and the quietest stretches — the Groenerei, the Sint-Anna quarter — are the Bruges the crowds miss.

## See it from the water

The classic Bruges experience: a low open boat from one of five jetties, gliding under humpbacked bridges past 500-year-old brick. Half an hour, and the best views in the city. Go early or late to skip the midday queue.

## The bridges & the quiet reien

On foot, follow the water away from the squares — the Groenerei's leafy reflections, the Bonifacius bridge behind the Church of Our Lady, the Sint-Anna quarter's near-empty crossings. Every bridge is a photograph.

Practical

## Make the most of the water

### Ride early or late

Boats run ~10am–6pm, Mar–Nov; midday queues are long. First and last departures are calm and best-lit.

### Walk the Groenerei

The prettiest quiet canal, minutes from the squares — best in the morning before the light hardens.

### Golden hour on the Rozenhoedkaai

The most famous canal view glows at sunset; arrive early for a spot.

### Stay central

From a central base every quay and bridge is a short stroll — chase the light, not a car park.
